Google Business Profile in Cyprus: set-up, verification, top 3
- 87 %of map results: more reviews stand higher
- 16reviews in the top 3, at the median
- 5working days for Google's check, at most
A Google Business Profile in Cyprus is free, and you set it up yourself at business.google.com. Google then checks that the business is real, which takes up to five working days. After that, reviews are the clearest thing the businesses at the top of the map share: in our 287 map searches in Cyprus, the business with more reviews stood higher in 87 % of the results.
The rules below are Google's own, read on 12 October 2026 and linked where they stand. The numbers come from our own map searches in Paphos, Limassol, Nicosia, Larnaca and the Famagusta area (how we counted).
What is a Google Business Profile, and what does it cost?
It is the box with your name, hours, phone number, photos and reviews that Google shows in Search and on Google Maps. It costs nothing: Google writes that you can add or claim your business at no charge.
Many people still call it Google My Business, its old name. It is the same thing.
How do you set up a Google Business Profile in Cyprus?
You sign in with a Google account, enter your business, and prove that it is yours. The steps on Google's page are these:
- Search for your business on Google Maps first. If it is already there, choose Claim this business. Do not create a second one.
- If it is not there, open business.google.com/add and choose Add your business to Google.
- Enter the name exactly as it stands on your sign and your papers.
- Choose the main category. It tells Google which searches fit you.
- Enter your address. If customers do not come to you, hide it and set a service area instead.
- Add phone number, website and opening hours.
- Choose a verification option and complete it.
Take the name seriously. Google's guidelines ask for the real-world name of the business, without added words such as a town or a service.
How does verification work in Cyprus?
Google decides how you verify. You cannot choose. Its verification page lists five methods: a phone call or text, an email, a video recording, a live video call and a postcard.
What Google writes about timing:
- A review takes up to five working days.
- A postcard with a code mostly arrives within 14 days. The code expires after 30 days.
- While you wait for a postcard, do not change the name, the address or the category. That makes the code invalid.
For a video call, Google asks you to show three things:
- Where you are: the sign outside, the street sign or the businesses next door.
- That the business exists: products, tools, branded equipment or printed material.
- That you run it: a key that opens the door, the till, a storage room, a document with the business name.
Have the same three things ready if Google asks you for a recorded video.
Why does verification fail?
Because the profile and the real place do not match. Google wants to see the place, the business and proof that you run it, and it compares all three with what your profile says.
Before you start, check these against each other:
- the name in the profile, on your sign and on your company papers
- the address, in one spelling. In Cyprus the same street often exists in a Greek and an English spelling.
- the category and what the camera will see
Verification costs nothing, and Google alone decides. Be careful with anyone who sells a guaranteed verification. Google also writes that it will never ask you for your code.
What if you have no shop or office?
Then you set up a profile with a service area and hide your address. Google calls this a service-area business: one that visits or delivers to customers and does not serve them at its own address.
- You can set up to 20 areas, by town or postcode.
- The whole area should stay within about two hours of driving from your base.
- A PO box or a virtual office is not accepted as an address.
Such a profile can rank. In our data, 209 of 921 agency profiles show no address, and they hold 14 % of all top 3 places on the map.
We set up our own profile this way in October 2026. We have no shopfront, so the address is entered and hidden, and the profile lists Paphos, Larnaca and two more districts as service areas. It is verified and public.
Can you have two Google Business Profiles?
Only if you have two real locations. Google's guidelines allow one profile for each business and one for each location with its own staff.
A second profile for the same business at a postal address or a friend's office breaks Google's guidelines. If someone else already holds your profile, request ownership: the current owner then has three days to answer.
Why is your business not showing up on Google Maps?
Most often for one of four reasons: the profile is not verified, the category does not fit the search, you are far from the person searching, or others have more reviews.
Google names three things that decide local results: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the person searching. Prominence is how well known the business is, and reviews count towards it.
Google also writes that you cannot ask or pay for a better place. So check the four reasons in that order.
How do you rank higher on Google Maps in Cyprus?
Collect reviews first. In our map searches, the higher of two businesses had more reviews in 87 % of the results, and it was closer to the person searching in 75 %.
| The business placed higher has | True in |
|---|---|
| More reviews | 87 % |
| Closer to the person searching | 75 % |
| More photos | 74 % |
| Main category matches the search | 74 % |
| A website of its own | 63 % |
| The search word in the business name | 63 % |
What follows from the table:
- Reviews come before distance. You cannot move your business, but you can ask every customer.
- Photos and the right main category come next. The businesses in the top 3 show a median of 6 photos.
- The search word in the name helps least, and it is against Google's rules.
These are things the top places have in common on one day. They do not prove what causes what. Your website belongs to the picture too: the profile links to it, and most business websites in Cyprus are slow. For the whole of it, see our SEO work in Cyprus.
How many reviews do the top 3 have?
Not many. Among web and marketing agencies in Cyprus, the businesses in the top 3 have a median of 16 reviews. Places 4 to 10 have 10, places 11 to 20 have 5.
By city, the median in the top 3 is:
- Limassol: 26 reviews
- Larnaca: 16
- Nicosia: 13
- Paphos: 12
- Famagusta area: 6
397 of the 921 agency profiles have no review at all, and only 14 have 50 or more. This is one industry. A restaurant or a hotel competes with far higher numbers, a plumber or an accountant often with lower ones. For twelve other industries, see how many Google reviews the top 3 have in Cyprus.
What does a profile at number 1 look like?
One of our clients shows it. TWINS-ATELIER, a tattoo and piercing studio in Hamburg, stands at number 1 on Google Maps for tattoo in Hamburg, with 4.9 stars from 879 Google reviews.
Hamburg is a far bigger market than any town in Cyprus, and 879 reviews are far more than the 16 that carry an agency into the top 3 here. The work behind it is the same: we built the website and look after the Google profile and the reviews. The studio is in Germany, not in Cyprus. We checked its place on 3 October 2026, and you can see it among our work.
How do you ask for reviews without breaking Google's rules?
Ask every customer, and offer nothing in return. Google allows you to remind customers and to share a link or a QR code, and it strictly forbids discounts or gifts for a review.
- Ask all customers the same way, not only the happy ones.
- Ask over weeks, not thirty people on one day.
- Reply to every review, in your own words. Of 252 agencies with five or more reviews, 122 have never replied to one.
How did we collect these numbers?
We ran 287 searches on Google Maps on 4 October 2026 and stored every result with its place, its reviews, its photos and its category. The searches cover Paphos, Limassol, Nicosia, Larnaca and the Famagusta area.
- Nine search points in each of the four cities, two to four kilometres apart, and five places in the Famagusta area.
- Seven search terms at each point, such as web design, marketing agency and seo agency.
- 921 listings of web and marketing agencies came out of it. 279 of the results could be compared: who stands above whom, and what the higher one has.
What the numbers cannot show:
- They describe one industry. Other industries have other numbers, the order of the signs may differ.
- It is one day. Map results change with the day, the device and the person searching.
- We searched in English and without a town in the search term.
- Profiles without an address have no real position. Distances count only profiles with an address.
